France bans private funding for coal, triples nuclear capacity.

French President Emmanuel Macron took the floor for 15 minutes at the World Climate Conference (COP28) in Dubai to outline Frances priorities in the fight against climate change. Macron urged developed countries to rapidly abandon fossil fuels and called for other major emitting countries to follow Frances model of “planning and transparency.” While NGOs welcomed the speech, they criticized the timeline as being “too late” for industrialized nations and not providing a clear exit strategy for developing countries. Macron emphasized the need for “a complete U-turn” on coal and launched an initiative to accelerate equitable transitions, aiming to end private investment in the most CO2-emitting fuel. The initiative will work through the World Bank and the OECD to provide strong messages and support for renewable investments and the early closure of power plants. (source=lemonde.fr)
