Saudi Insurance Sector: CEOs Collaborate in Historic Meeting

DUBAI: The Saudi Green Initiative Forum (SGI Forum) kicked off on Monday as COP28 continues to mobilize world leaders towards serious action against climate change. Held under the slogan “From Ambition to Action”, the 3rd edition of the forum will discuss critical sustainability, primarily energy transition, protecting the seas, and unlocking climate finance to enable climate action at the UN climate Summit.

Yasir Al-Rumayyan, Governor of the Public Investment Fund, highlighted the importance of the fund as the main engine of the Saudi economy. Saudi Arabia was the fastest-growing in GDP among the G20 member states last year, with a growth rate of 8.7%. Al-Rumayyan mentioned that the fund is designing a net-zero transition plan set to launch in the first quarter of next year.

Dr. Mohammed Al-Tamimi, Governor of the Communications, Space and Technology Commission, and Acting CEO of Saudi Space, emphasized the significance of space technology in climate information and the need to protect critical infrastructure and address the issue of space debris. He stated that Saudi Arabia is planning a workshop in the first quarter of next year to tackle the global problem of space debris.

Angela Wilkinson, CEO of the World Energy Council, discussed the impact of Saudi Arabias initiatives in combating climate change. She expressed the importance of proactive commitments at both individual and community levels to achieve sustainable goals.

Ray Dalio, founder and mentor CIO of Bridgewater Associates, highlighted the importance of ocean exploration and the need for partnerships to protect and explore the ocean. He praised Saudi Arabias efforts in exploring the Red Sea and expressed the vision of making ocean exploration infectious globally.

Dr. Lisa Levin, Distinguished Professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, emphasized the diversity of deep-sea ecosystems and the potential benefits in terms of medicines and pharmaceuticals. She discussed the UN High Seas Treaty as a powerful tool for creating protected areas and preventing the deep sea from becoming a dumping ground or resource extraction site.

Various other speakers at the SGI Forum, including Bandar Alkhorayef, Saudi Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, Mohammad Al Tayyar, Program Director of the Oil Sustainability Program, Nadhmi Al-Nasr, CEO of NEOM, and Princess Haifa bint Muhammad Al-Saud, Saudi Vice Minister of Tourism, reaffirmed the Kingdoms commitment towards energy transition and sustainable development.
