A Roadmap for Increasing Capital Flow into Mangrove Protection and Restoration

A report was launched at COP28, offering a roadmap to increase capital flow into mangrove protection and restoration. Developed by The Global Mangrove Alliance and the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions, in partnership with Systemiq, the Financial Roadmap aims to achieve the financial goals of the Mangrove Breakthrough. The roadmap provides recommendations for unlocking capital at scale, with the involvement of diverse actors such as finance providers, policymakers, communities, NGOs, and civil society. Mangroves are important for carbon sequestration, coastline defense, and providing livelihoods, but they are under threat, with half already lost. However, an estimated $US4 billion in investment by 2030 could help secure their future. The roadmap calls for collective action and emphasizes the need for public, private, and philanthropic capital to converge and create a step-change in finance for mangroves. The report was made in collaboration with the Financial Services Taskforce of the Sustainable Markets Initiative.
