Filipino Expat Teaches People to Make Solar Lamps in 30 Minutes at COP28

Dubai: Filipino expat Illac Diaz, founder of Liter of Light, is utilizing the climate action summits to make a difference. Active in the last two Conference of the Parties (COP) of the UNFCCC, Diaz continues his participation at COP28 in Dubais Expo City. During the event, he will host workshops in the Green Zone, teaching visitors how to create their own solar lamps within just 30 minutes. Diazs involvement in the previous UNFCCC conferences involved building large-scale solar art installations for climate action.

Liter of Light, Diazs social enterprise, which originated in the Philippines and has since expanded globally, including in the UAE, aims to amplify the voices of climate leaders from the region during the COP conferences. Present in 32 countries with over 2,700 youth ambassadors, the organization continues to raise awareness about climate change.

Raising further awareness, Diazs Liter of Light was recently showcased at COP26, hosted by the UK and Italy. At the event, the Filipino expat displayed large-scale, hand-built solar art installations. In the following year, Diaz collaborated with students from the University of Saint Andrews, an official COP26 partner, to construct a series of installations on campus. All installations made by Liter of Light involve students and women volunteers, emphasizing the organizations commitment to inclusivity.

Diaz stated that they teach individuals to create solar lights for their installations and guide them in assembling the lights by hand within 30 minutes. The involvement of student volunteers, women cooperatives, and young leaders contributes to the larger climate action. Diazs efforts aim to give a platform to those who do not have access to technology or platforms to share their stories and messages regarding climate change. By engaging the youth and the community, Liter of Light pioneers a novel form of engagement where technical skills for climate action meet creative expression. With Dubai hosting the global climate change conference in 2023, Diaz intends to lend his voice to the dialogue on climate change solutions.
