Restoration Program for Mangrove Crab Population

Researchers from UMS Borneo Marine Research Institute have released 45,000 mangrove crab seedlings into the mangrove swamps of Sabah, Malaysia. The seedlings have been released in various districts since 2018, and this year, almost 3,000 seedlings were released at the Kota Kinabalu Wetland Ramsar site. The release program aims to restore and maintain the mangrove crab population in Sabah waters. It integrates scientific research, community involvement, and long-term monitoring. The researchers are conducting extensive research to identify suitable locations for the reintroduction of mangrove crabs, taking into account factors like water quality and food sources. The program also focuses on community participation and education, and UMS has partnered with local communities, fishermen, and stakeholders to raise awareness about sustainable mangrove crab conservation. The IPMB has developed a monitoring protocol to evaluate the program s effectiveness.
