Challenges in Jakarta: Tackling coastal erosion with mangrove plantation

Jakarta faces the challenge of coastal areas, including erosion, which is believed to be solved through regular mangrove planting, according to Ahmed Zaki Iskandar. Inconsistency in mangrove planting has been identified as a cause of erosion. Therefore, consistent and sustainable mangrove planting is being planned to address this issue. “We will carry out mangrove planting consistently and not half-heartedly. This inconsistency in mangrove planting is what causes erosion,” said Ahmed Zaki Iskandar. This solution aims to prevent further damage to the coastal ecosystem and loss of coastal areas.

Ahmed Zaki Iskandar has previously transformed eroded areas with deteriorating water quality around Ketapang Beach, Mauk District, Tangerang Regency. He initiated the planting of mangrove forests on a 26.9-hectare land. As a result, the quality of water improved, and Ketapang Village became productive again through aquaculture. “Good coastal area management is not easy and requires consistency. Raising awareness among the community that the sea and coast are inseparable is the pathway to a better life,” Ahmed Zaki Iskandar emphasized.

In Jakarta, efforts to prevent sea water from entering residential areas through dikes have not yielded satisfactory results. The dikes, instead of protecting against sea water, have been damaged. Moreover, excessive groundwater usage has caused land subsidence. To mitigate this, Ahmed Zaki Iskandar has constructed communal water pipelines along the coastal areas. These pipelines aim to reduce groundwater usage and protect the land from further subsidence.

Furthermore, Jakarta aims to harness the potential of its coast and sea to foster economic growth. Initiatives include developing the economy in the Thousand Islands region. Improving access and mobility is the first step to unlock the full potential of the Thousand Islands. “We need to improve mobility first or else the potential of the Thousand Islands will not be optimized,” emphasized the two-term Regent of Tangerang.
