Mubadala Energy Signs Mangrove Conservation Pledge
Mubadala Energy joins hands with the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) to bolster nature-based solutions, aiming to plant 100,000 mangroves annually until 2030. This commitment aligns with the UAEs net zero goals and the Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC). Mubadala Energys partnership with EAD, as part of the Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative, aims to conserve and restore mangroves and other blue carbon ecosystems globally. Their efforts will be backed by science-based research and innovation, acknowledging the significant role nature-based solutions play in preservation. Mubadala Energys previous work in coastal conservation in the UAE and Indonesia will now be scaled up, directly contributing to the UAEs objective of planting 100 million mangroves by 2030.

Their focus on mangrove restoration aligns perfectly with the UAE hosting COP28, which emphasizes climate dialogues. Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, commends Mubadala Energys pledge, emphasizing the importance of leveraging nature to combat global climate change. Abu Dhabi has been at the forefront of mangrove restoration, achieving a remarkable 92 percent increase in mangrove habitats over the past three decades.
Mubadala Energys commitment to decarbonization and driving low-carbon solutions is also evident through recent collaborations with Masdar, Pertamina, and PARCO. These partnerships explore areas such as energy transition, Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS), and the circular economy. Mangroves are recognized as crucial in sequestering carbon, storing more per unit area than any other ecosystem on Earth. Moreover, they safeguard coastal communities, preventing property damage worth approximately $65 billion annually and reducing flood risks for millions of people. Mangroves also play a vital role in supporting marine food chains, with roughly 80 percent of the global fish catch relying on them.
