Strengthening Jamaica s Mangrove Ecosystem


Jamaica s mangrove ecosystem is being strengthened through the Jamaica Mangroves Plus Project, a four-year initiative implemented by the Forestry Department. The project, funded by a grant from the Global Environment Facility, aims to promote biodiversity and sustainable management of wetland forest habitats. The CEO of the Forestry Department emphasized the importance of mangroves in preserving the health of the island s coastlines. The project focuses on restoring, rehabilitating, protecting, and conserving wetland forests through policy changes, awareness raising, mapping, website development, and rehabilitation efforts. The initiative aligns with the National Mangrove and Swamp Management Plan and seeks to impact direct and indirect beneficiaries while receiving co-financing from various organizations.
