World Wetlands Day was recently celebrated, and now the UNESCO Regional Office for Egypt and Sudan is inviting people to embark on a virtual journey to explore the vital mangrove ecosystems of the Arab Region. This invitation comes in the form of a virtual exhibition that showcases the beauty, importance, and challenges faced by these extraordinary ecosystems. The exhibition focuses on highlighting the role of mangroves within wetlands and their significance in sustaining life on Earth. With 192 wetlands of international value, covering 1.69% of the surface areas, the region is home to rich and diverse ecosystems. However, these wetlands, including the mangroves, face threats from various human activities. It is alarming that mangroves, in particular, are disappearing at a rapid rate, with severe ecological and socio-economic consequences. More than three-quarters of mangroves worldwide are now threatened, endangering the various organisms that depend on them.
The virtual exhibition aims to shed light on the urgent need to address these threats and protect mangrove ecosystems.
