An Investigation into Destruction of Mangroves in TS Chanakya: Environmentalists Demand Action

An investigation has been initiated into the destruction of approximately 150 mangroves in the wetlands of TS Chanakya in Nerul, Navi Mumbai. The NRI Sagari Police filed a First Information Report (FIR) under Section 15(1) of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. The FIR was registered based on a complaint made to the deputy planner of City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) about the intentional destruction of mangroves. An inspection conducted in December 2023 confirmed the extensive destruction, leading to an internal probe. CIDCO revealed that a portion of the land was leased to a private developer who claims to have no knowledge of the responsible party due to ongoing litigation. Environmentalists have described the incident as a daylight murder and have been urging authorities to address the damage to the ecosystem. The forest department has confirmed that the trees cut were mangroves, and activists believe that filing the FIR is an important step towards finding the culprits.
