A PIL against CIDCO for Failure to Protect Wetlands and Mangroves

A fresh public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the High Court (HC) against City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) for its failure to protect the wetlands and mangroves in Navi Mumbai. The petition highlights the intentional destruction of over 200 mangroves near T.S Chanakaya lake in Nerul. The petitioner, Kanchan Purohit, blames CIDCO for initiating the destruction by constructing a golf course and residential towers in Coastal Regulation Zones (CRZ). The PIL seeks to stop constructions within 100 meters of the High Tide Line and demands that the state government issues warnings about investing in CRZ projects. Purohit had previously attempted to resolve the issue through other government offices and the Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority. The PIL could potentially provide access to documents that describe the government s efforts to conserve wetlands and may lead to the transfer of these areas to the forest department.
