The NGT s Inquiry on Controversial Tirupati Balaji Temple Construction in Ulwe
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has asked the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) and the chief conservator of forests to provide information on the construction of a Tirupati Balaji temple in Ulwe. The project has faced allegations of violating coastal regulation zone (CRZ) rules from environmentalists. The application was filed by environmentalist B N Kumar, who claimed that MCZMA had recommended CRZ clearance for the project without considering that the temple plot was part of a temporary casting yard that destroyed mangroves on over 16 hectares. In response, MCZMA s recommendation was based on the non-CRZ area, but no clearance was given for the temple s construction. The NGT bench has issued notices to MCZMA and the forest department, asking them to respond within two weeks. The next hearing is scheduled for January 12.
