Her Excellency Mariam Almheiri highlighted that the UAE is committed to promoting nature-based solutions to drive climate action. With the Year of Sustainability and the upcoming COP28, the UAE aims to become a global model in mangrove planting as a nature-based solution to address climate change. The UAE has already launched the Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC) initiative in partnership with Indonesia. Additionally, the UAE endorsed the Mangrove Breakthrough initiative, which aims to restore and protect 15 million hectares of mangroves worldwide by 2030. The UAE is dedicated to realizing its target of planting 100 million mangrove trees by 2030 and sharing its experience with the world. source=zawya.com
The cooperation with Al Rostamani Group demonstrates the Ministrys efforts to collaborate with the private sector in achieving the UAEs climate and environmental goals. The Ministry looks forward to further cooperation to achieve the UAEs Net Zero by 2050 goals. Chairman of Al Rostamani Group, H.E. Marwan Abdullah Al Rostamani, expressed the Groups commitment to sustainable development and their support for the Ministrys initiative. The collaboration between the Ministry and Al Rostamani Group will contribute to the expansion of mangrove plantations and establishing a modern mangrove nursery. This newly established nursery will focus on producing seedlings, aiming to produce 7 million mangrove seedlings annually until 2030. Mangrove forests play a crucial role in protecting the UAEs coastlines, providing habitats for marine species, and acting as natural carbon sinks. Currently, the UAE is home to 60 million mangrove trees, covering an area of 183 square kilometers and capturing 43,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. By adding 100 million mangrove trees, the total coverage will reach 483 square kilometers, capturing 115,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. Mangrove trees are highly effective in capturing and storing carbon emissions, with studies showing their ability to capture carbon emissions up to 4-5 times that of terrestrial ecosystems. Moreover, mangrove trees are essential for marine species, as 80% of global fish species rely on mangroves for survival. source=zawya.com
